GLOBAL OUTAGE

How ESET Handles Updates

The recent global IT outage put tremendous pressure on IT operations including banks, airports, payment systems and others either directly or indirectly.  Most commentators have blamed a faulty security software update. While updates are vital in maintaining safety, deployment and testing must also be carefully considered. ESET has over 35 years of experience providing protection with care, including regular updates and innovations in cybersecurity for over a million users world-wide.

For any customers not yet enjoying the reliable protection provided by ESET we remind you of the “Buy Out” promotion which offers up to 40% discount on selected Eset offerings. Please contact us for more information.

Live on CNN, Jake More, ESET Global Security Advisor,  spoke about the recent global outage.

ESET Update Process

  • Distributed agents – the management agent and protection agent are distributed separately for increased redundancy (a single agent is a single point of failure).

  • Auto-update is default-enabled for the agents; however there are various configuration options, including to apply the changes “after reboot” (large-scale issues can be prevented).

  • ESET encourages users to maintain proper update procedures, and to both install and promote good behaviour – first, install updates in a test environment, then proceed with deployment.  Archived versions are maintained in a software repository to ensure the ability to rollback to previous builds if needed.

  • Distribution of modules is via “pre-release,” “release,” and “delayed” update servers – so critical infrastructure operators can choose an appropriate “risk-averse,” approach whereby any issues can be managed. In cases where there is a roll out of larger changes, they are released in “batches”,  carefully monitoring any impact to prevent issues from happening.

  • After decades of operations, ESET’s quality assurance processes and behaviours are fine-tuned to such a degree that that technical teams even avoid delivering large or critical updates at the end of the work week when staffing levels may be low. Even so, ESET is a strong proponent of cyber resilience strategy implementation, as incidents of the magnitude seen this week can occur (whether caused by outages, natural disasters, malicious attacks or errors) and swift remediation often comes through preparedness.

  • All updates are digitally signed, and the signature is verified in several stages of the update process. This failsafe means that a corrupted update would be rejected by the agent.
